Types of Forgiveness
PSLF
Public Service Loan Forgiveness is available for those who work full-time for a certified employer that involves public service. Some examples of this may include: law enforcement, firefighting, working for a non-profit and/or a qualifying government funded position. To become eligible, you must enroll into a qualifying repayment program and complete at least 10 years (or 120) successful, on-time payments.
Income-Driven
If you do not work for a certified employer, you may still be eligible to receive forgiveness benefits. To qualify, you must enroll into an income-driven repayment plan such as PAYE, REPAYE, IBR or IBC. Depending on the specific type of repayment program(s) you qualify for, you will need to make anywhere between 20 and 25 years of successful, on-time payments. Once your set number of payments are complete, the remainder of your balance may be forgiven.
Teachers
To become eligible, you must work as a full-time educator for at least five consecutive years in a low-income, qualifying district. Depending on your specific employer, you may also be eligible for PSLF.
Veterans
Thank you for your service. For those who have been deemed 100% disabled due to service in the armed forces, you may be eligible to have your student loan debt wiped clean through a Total and Permanent Disability Discharge.
Nurses
Under the NURSE Corps Loan Repayment program, both licensed nurses and those who meet certain criteria working as a part of a nursing facility may qualify. The amount of forgiveness you may be eligible for will vary based on the area/community you work in. For those working in parts of the country where there is critical shortage of healthcare, a higher percentage of forgiveness help may be available.
Doctors
Doctor or physician forgiveness may vary depending on your specific specialty and the type of facility you work in. In many cases, forgiveness assistance for doctors is given in exchange for a work commitment within the government, state or individual institution that may offer such benefits. You may also qualify for forgiveness under PSLF if you work full-time for a certified employer.
Lawyers
Similar to doctors, eligibility is typically exchanged for a commitment to work in a certain sector of the government or a public/privately owned institution that offers forgiveness benefits. PSLF may also be available if you work for a certified employer in a qualifying sector.
Discharge
For those with federal student loans and have become permanently disabled, are a victim of fraud, or pass away, your student debt may be discharged and forgiven. If your school closes while you’re enrolled or soon after you withdraw, you may also be eligible for a discharge of your federal student loans.
